The Government are now to gamble away £50 billion to rescue banks after they went through decades of irresponsible lending and paying out huge bonuses to people who were nothing more than a bunch of commission hunters.
The phrase “Credit Crunch” is still being banded around, but it is not that, it is a recession or for others it is a “depression”.
Unemployment is set to hit 2,000,000, yet the only people who seem to think jobs are actually being created are the mass amount of quango’s this country has who continually churn out their propaganda.
David Cameron has said he knows the recession will be tough for some, but he’ll be ok, that’s because he has a guaranteed income from the tax payer. No matter how tough things become, tax will always have to be paid.
The Shropshire Star ran a story on 7th October 2008 under the headline
‘Crunch will bite for years to come’
You don’t need to be a financial wizard to know that. Yet the conservative administration saw fit to increase councillors allowances by around £132k. Then we have to endure the same old lines,
“We do miss out on overtime and promotion at work”
Which is the same old lame excuse to justify a certain few filling their pockets. They knew this could be the case before they ran for election, then chose to moan about monies not being available for their wards.
If the Administration were actually prudent with our money, stopped these ridiculous increases in allowances and stopped all these fat cats in the ivory tower from dipping into the pot, then maybe things would not be as hard.
The administration said the return of weekly waste cost was equivalent to a 2% council tax increase, then surely these increase in allowances are equivalent to at least 1% increase.
But what have we seen recently,
Assets sold at almost bargain basement prices in the now named “Eade Bay sales”
Local businesses had their properties sold from beneath them without any form of appeal process in a situation that was grossly mishandled.
As reported previously, a senior citizen who relies on a cleaner employed by the council has seen a 70% increase in his costs.
Carers have seen increased costs.
Monies removed from libraries.
Monies removed from homeless storage
Council tax increased
Charges for bulk waste collection
The people who can afford it the least are the people being hit the hardest and this is without the increase in petrol, gas, electricity etc.
Some Head Teachers are now going out cap in hand to businesses to get financial support, some of the new school builds are being delayed and the latest is, the regeneration of Woodside to come to a grinding halt half way through a job and these monies diverted to another part of Telford.
If there is an under spend in budgets, why can’t the remainder be used for community benefits?
Why can’t it be re-invested into
Youth Support
Education
Providing more teachers
Keeping the Council Tax down
Supporting Small Businesses
Supporting Carers and Senior Citizens
This approach could be considered “Prudent”
But in truth, we will see and hear more excuses as to why something cannot be done, rather than excuses as to why something can be done.
Banks and big business will be propped up by public money, whilst the small business, education and the struggling resident will be left to their own devices.
