Telford and Wrekin Council has recently seen a large number of Council Assets go to auction in Haydock raising over £1,000,000 in the sales
There was some considerable lack of communication with elected members and members of the public had no idea these sales were going ahead.
The public are only the tax payer and pay for all these pieces of land, there up keep etc, so why should they be kept in the loop?
The topic of the “Eade Bay Auctions” was discussed at some lengths at the following link
In this topic it became very clear that the people we elected to represent us were not involved or informed of the decision to sell Council Assets effectively owned by the residents of the borough.
The proof that elected members were not informed about sales was proven beyond any doubt in a confession wrote by Steve Wellings in an email sent out to Councillors and the following was said by Steve Wellings,
Quote Chief Executive Steve Wellings
“Firstly, I would like to apologise unreservedly for the fact that we did not let you know in advance about the schedule of assets we were putting up for sale. In our haste to try to arrange the best situation from an asset management and financial view (both laudable aims I am sure you would agree) the sequencing of involving you went awry.” There were a number of questions asked about the Sale of assets and the fact that the proceeds are to used by the Council when they eventually apply for lottery funding to alter the Town Park and again raise further funds by selling off large parts of the Town Park.
I and others firmly believe that its is not only in the public interest to know what the Council is doing or intends to do with assets that we ultimately pay for but we have a right to know especially when the Chif Executive was so inept in the handling of the last “Eade Bay Auctions”
Lets now take a trip back to February 2007 in which Andrew Eade promised us all
“an open and honest Council”
“Working With us hand in glove”
“Owning up to mistakes that have been made”
I for one am still waiting for this to happen 12 months later.
The recent debacle with regards the land sales should be of great concern to us all. Telford and Wrekin Council do have an area on their web site that has been allocated to the listing of Council Assets for sale, but this has not been updated or used in several years.
It is possible and highly likely that the council own assets being used by community groups, voluntary services and local business which could and probably are listed for sale.
With all this in mind, I believe it is in the public interest for them to know what council assets are owned, which have been sold, which assets have been highlighted for sale and the plans are with others, the Council last provided this info some two years ago.
I phoned the property department and asked for the info of what Council assets are listed for sale and which have been sold, they declined to provide this information, its not on the web site or in any public forum, so I submitted an FOI.
Today I have received a reply from Alan Fox – Asset & Property Manager (Estates & Investments)
Saying
“It is possible that disclosing the information may not be in the public interest.
I say
We pay as Residents
We use these assets as residents
Clubs, Groups, Voluntary Organisations rely on these assets
Businesses run and employ residents in these assets
Bearing in mind the cock up made by Steve Wellings Chief Executive
It is in our Interest to know what they are doing and what they intend to do.
I now put this to Andrew Eade – are you now prepared to tell this officer to supply the information requested.
Are you prepared to start keeping your pre election promises and start being open and honest
Or are you
Going to keep the same old thing, the same old way because
“its always been done that way”
Will Andrew Eade be prepared to meet me and one or two others, face to face and the questions we have asked?
