Full Council Thursday 6th March
Is certainly going to be one to watch. Issues to be voted on will be the budget that was proposed by the Conservative Administration.
Initially, the budget seemed sound but now a very big question mark hangs over it.
BULK WASTE
The Conservative Administration propose a £15 charge for the removal of bulk waste and appears to be a charge per item.
This policy is without a doubt fundamentally flawed and poorly thought through.
Telford and Wrekin is a low wage and low economy community, with some areas being amongst the most deprived in the country.
Many people rely on getting furniture from places like Chairs N Spares, others get furniture given to them, many more are living below the bread line and will not be able pay per item removal.
This policy will increase fly tipping.
If the disabled, senior citizens, unemployed, those in receipt of benefits are able to have bulk waste taken away free, how will this be implemented?
With a policy that has so many grey areas, it cannot be allowed to go through.
The Conservative Administration have done a number of U Turns,
The City Region – They were against it
Meals on Wheels increased by 20p per meal down from 75p increase
The Town Park – Large parts remain up for Sale
Residents place at full Council – not mentioned and questions unanswered
Weekly Waste Collections – still fortnightly
The latest saga of Council Asset Auctions.
These have certainly gone against them quite recently.
Other Issues
Some other issues have got people talking and are quite a sticking point, are the lack of representation on the Cabinet from the Telford Constituency and no representation from South Telford.
This is going to be quite a feature on Tuesday 4th at Sutton Hill Community Centre, I would suggest that Andrew Eade gets a South Telford representative PDQ, wouldn’t it be better for the residents, someone who knows the area, rather than someone who has only just been there.
I would suggest a Community Consultation Role to look at this issue on a global basis.
This is the real issue COUNCIL TAX
As we know, the Tories have put forward a 4.3% Council tax Rise with the Labour Leader Keith Austin preparing to put forward a 3.9% Council Tax rise.
Just for one minute, lets put Political Parties to one side and look at the proposed increases and who they affect,
Every single one them negatively impact on the most vulnerable and poorest in every single community
JUST WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF –
A Couple of Tories abstained from the vote
Went to the toilet
Never turned up
Voted against the budget ignoring the Whip
All in opposition voted against the budget
I Do have a question for every Borough Councillor
Not just thinking of the above – Can any Borough Councillor vote For an increase in Council Tax when an alternative and lower one is presented?
Any Councillor that does is not likely to hold their seat at the next elections.
