The saga of the Penguins continues and will continue for sometime yet. After Telford and Wrekin Council reached world wide embarrassment and condemnation of its policy of checking lone adults in the Town Park, Rachel Whittaker and her colleagues who campaign on environmental issues, found themselves being banned from “Madeley Green Day”
The Campaigners turned up to Madeley Green Day after their invitation was retracted without any explanation. The Group attended the event and handed out leaflets raising the awareness about “Global Warming”, something you would expect to find at a Green Event.
The Campaigners wore gags and the signs pictured below.
![]() Even though Cllr David Davies was quoted in the Shropshire Star as saying
“Things could have been done better”
He continued in the same old manner we have come to expect from a number of Councillors, whether Parish or Borough.
Cllr Davies confirmed
“I decided to retract the invitation which was a unilateral decision made for and on behalf 17 other Councillors”
Cllr Davies went onto say that
“the invitation was with drawn because it had not been discussed at Council”
It came to light moments after that non of the others attending the event had been discussed at Council either.
Cllr Davies said he new nothing about the issues revolving around The Town Park had had not read the Shropshire Star. He obviously never watched the news, listened to the radio, viewed the internet or read any of the national papers that covered the debacle either.
Clearly he spent several days living under a rock not listening to any current affairs.
It soon became apparent that Cllr Davies has an issue with Global Warming as he also wanted other signs about the issue removing from the event, although I would expect him to deny that, the signs he wanted removing are pictured below,
![]() This is another issue that had nothing to do with policy, but it had more to do with stopping freedom of speech in yet another public area.
Whilst Cllr Davies was quoting some kind of procedure and rules, he quite conveniently ignored other rules that were broken, displaying an application of the rules as he saw fit to apply them.
As an elected member said
“this is what happens when people get onto the Council without actually being elected, then they choose to co-opt their friends onto the same Council”
“The people of Madeley need to do something to stop this kind of thing happening in the future”
A member of Madeley Parish Council has confirmed by email
“the decision to de-ivite Wrekin Stopwar was taken by Councillor David Davis not the council i as you know am not happy about it and intend to raise it at the next full council”
This makes it more than clear that Cllr Davies has not discussed the issue with any other member of the council, but as he said,
“It was a democratic decision”
Just who are you trying to kid Cllr Davies.
Wrekin Stop War soon gain considerable public support as members of the public asked for their leaflets and they made their point leaving so it would not spoil the day for others.
This is the kind of consideration others could certainly learn from.
