LETS Comes to Telford
Can’t Pay? Try Another Way

Money…..who needs it? John Franklyn looks at Lets, the local trading scheme where you exchange skills, not cash.

BARTER is back, Specifically in the form of Local Exchange Trading Schemes (LETS), which enable individuals to obtain services without resorting to cash and to run up interest free debts re-payable in kind.

The idea is that you use someone else’s service, whether aromatherapy, gardening or getting your accounts done or even arranging an entire wedding, without any money changing hands. To repay those debts you offer your own chosen services to other members. Services have a LETS price and are netted off centrally, so the schemes work something like alternative currencies.

LETS has over 40,000 members nation wide and John Franklyn Telford LETS Group Co-ordinator hopes that it will take off in Telford and Wrekin which is the first time it has been established within the Borough.

Telford Lets Group will have a Social and Welfare Role extending its members purchasing powers and allowing them access to additional services through Barter which they would or may never be able to afford otherwise.

The increasing cost of living, the credit crunch and the possibility of a recession could fuel the growth of TELFORD LETS GROUP. LETS protects its members from the vicissitudes of the broader economy, since demand is untrammelled by the availability of hard cash.

The TELFORD LETS GROUP will also act as a social event allowing individuals and families to join in online, at meetings and Social Functions.

Everybody has something to offer and everybody has something to gain from personal development through to having a service provided without the worry of having to rely on hard cash.

The whole point of LETS is that it is local, it caters for the need of local people, creating a valuable community spirit and is inclusive to all regardless of age.
