Only Fools Make The Same Mistake Twice

The Leader of Telford and Wrekin Council, Cllr Andrew Eade has issued an apology, saying

“We made a mistake and I’m Sorry”

I’ll credit to Andrew Eade for having the courage to say such a thing and we must admit, this kind of apology is a rarity.

In a letter to the Shropshire Star, John Evans who is a former Community Worker and Social Worker has said

I understand council leader Andrew  Eade has apologised over the mis-use of power in the town park fiasco. This is to his credit and he has shown wisdom in accepting others were in the wrong , had insulted the public, and embarrassed the council.

It is hoped that positive action will be taken regarding councillor Allen's position as cabinet member for community Services and against Mr Odunaiya who is ultimately responsible for the letter sent out by his department and for coming on radio stating that such as myself were not telling the truth despite quoting from his departments letter. He has in effect behaved in such a way that it may be defined as ultra vires,in that he has exceeded his powers and has made several mis-leading statements with regard to policy

These sentiments have also been echoed by other residents.

Whilst Mr.R.Odunaiya is ultimately responsible, It has also been suggested that the legal department backed up every statement and letter sent out, they even interpreted the CRB Regulations incorrectly.

One thing must not happen, and that is simply, Mr.Dave Ottley, who sent out the letter, must NOT be used as a scapegoat.

The responsibility for this extremely embarrassing episode rests fairly and squarely with someone in a more Senior Position.

Mr.Ron Odunaiya is quoted in the Shropshire star as having said,

“The Situation would be reviewed”

And so it should be, I would even say that any person who agreed with this ridiculous idea, should take time out and do a complete rethink, after all, you don’t need to be an expert on Telford Town Park in order to identify poor policy, practice and procedure.

I for one intend to go ahead with the Protest on Saturday 13th September at 1030am at the Arena,

Why?

Because I firmly believe, that if we take our foot off the accelerator and do not maintain our momentum, the issue will go to sleep and no real change will be implemented.

Unfortunately, recent events have caused a great many people considerable upset, discomfort and embarrassed Telford and Wrekin Council because someone exceeded their powers.

It has been suggested that a petition could be raised expressing a vote of No Confidence in the Chief Executive, the legal department and others who allow such stupid statements to be made.

The only route forward, is to maintain public pressure on Telford and Wrekin Council, attend meetings such as Full Council and Cabinet Meetings, examine information available, listen to everything that is said and report on it thoroughly.

No longer can we trust those operating in Telford and Wrekin HQ, no longer can we trust our elected members and for those that are good people and hardworking, unfortunately you will be painted with same brush because of the ineptitude of some of your colleagues.

It is time that Telford and Wrekin Council now open themselves to the resident. Actually deliver on the promise to be open and honest, allow residents to actually have a say and an input to policy, practice and procedure.

Residents now need the right to speak at Full Council, at planning meetings, I for one have had enough of some Councillors churning out a load of blurb and on  occasions even being insulting and we can only listen.

I invite Councillors and Officers to attend our protest and let’s see if the wind of change will finally blow in our favour.

The Whole World Cannot be Wrong

Telford and Wrekin Council are now trying to back track on the issue of and as they put in writing,

“Staff approach adults that are not associated with any children in the Town Park and request the reason for them being there”

They have also accused the Shropshire Star of exaggerating the story, I and others firmly believe that the Shropshire Star have covered this crazy issue very thoroughly and fairly, including video evidence of the councils  attempt to enforce a police state.

And now on Radio 5 live Ron Odunaiya says this policy has been in force for 9 years and he then went on to lie further saying a man on his own will not be approached, yet the video evidence filmed by The Shropshire Star clearly displayed this happening.   I will record this radio interview and place it in a podcast for all to listen to.

This denial shows just how “cover ups” and a constant stream of “denial” is flooding through the Council and the likes of Ron Odunaiya have been allowed to get away with it for far too long.

Telford and Wrekin Council constantly flounder from one disaster to the next and the issue of the Town Park goes beyond the Penguin Scenario. I am sure those who attended the initial Town Park meeting in 2007 when invited parties were given the choice of three options to discuss and Cllr Steve Bentley said

“Doing nothing is not an option”

Removing one of the Choices we were given.

The same people will also recall the vote that happened, Officers, Cllr’s, Groups and residents conducted a vote about the future of the Arena, which came out about even, but when residents and groups left the room,

Officers and Councillors then conducted a second vote tipping the outcome in their favour.

Another example of the devious tricks the Council will play in order to get their way.

The same residents will also recall that the minutes of this meeting were taken, when requested, the Council failed to release them, Council Leader Andrew Eade ignored my request for a copy of minutes to a meeting I and others attended, but only released them when,

I submitted a Freedom of Information request to get access to a set of minutes for a public meeting.

Telford and Wrekin Council have been condemned by
Kidscape and The home Office,

They have been covered in the national news and through a great many websites and blogs throughout the internet and condemned by people as far away as the USA.

Yet, the ONLY people who believe they are doing the right thing are Telford and Wrekin Council, surely the whole world cannot be wrong.

When the Conservative Party were running their election Campaign prior to the May elections they included in their leaflet and I quote directly,

An Open and Honest Council that Responds to the Community – saying

The Conservative group will bring to an end a Labour Administration that has become tired, defensive, dictatorial and out of touch with the needs and expectations of a community that it supposedly represents.

We will open up council thinking and decision making to work hand in glove with the Community and ensure a transparent debate on key issues that affect us all at the present time and in the future. Social and Health Care, the level and type of Housing Development across the borough, the Town Centre and Town Park Developments, the Green Network, and the ‘City regions’ represent huge challenges and changes for us all.

They go on further to say

We will be honest, open and ‘up front’ on problems and difficult issues

Just like Council Leader Cllr Andrew Eade promised to give residents a voice at Full Council and the ability to talk at planning meetings,

Cllr Andrew Eade and the Conservative Administration have failed to maintain and deliver the most basic of promises they made prior to the 2007 elections and started to fall at the very first hurdle.

Are Telford and Wrekin Council and the Conservative Administration now going to deny they,

*Messed up the issue of Telford Town Park
*Messed up Asset Sales seeing businesses sold out
*Removed monies from libraries - £18k
*Removed monies   from local help groups - £5k
*Removed Monies from Homelessness Storage -£5k
*Increased the cost of Carers Support
*Increased the cost of meals on wheels
*Joined the City Region
*Still have Transforming Telford after condemning them
*Looking at setting up another quango
*Messed up the EP A442
*Put up the Bridge School for Sale
*Introduced a charge for bulk waste collections
*Remain with 2 weekly household waste collections
*Struck a £22.3 million deal with housing developers
*Increased the amount of top earners in the Council
*Filled a budget gap by selling a Car Park in Donnington

Telford and Wrekin Council continue to flounder from one mess to the next and stumble from cover up to the next.

Telford and Wrekin Council, write letters, write Policy, place various articles in various media publications, but when a resident refers to it

“The resident is accused of misleading the public”

I am pleased to note that Cllr Kuldip Sahota has had the courage to say,

“this Council policy has gone too far and is perverse and even grotesque”

I for one will not let this issue go, I will still openly but peacefully protest in Telford Town Park on Saturday 13th September 2008 from 1030 am starting at the Arena.

And I for one will continue to campaign on multi issues that affect our Community on a daily basis, that is often as a direct result of Telford and Wrekin Councils failure to maintain the most basic of promises they continue to make whilst continuing to break.

Telford & Wrekin Councils Pervert Patrols Cause Uproar

The fundamentally flawed policy of approaching “lone Adults” in Telford Town Park has spread through the internet like a virus.

The Policy adopted by Telford & Wrekin Council has been professionally reported on in the Shropshire Star and covered by many other websites and blogs.

The one theme that is flooding through comments, posts and reports, is a tidal wave of discontent and total disbelief of how a top rated council could be so narrow minded in their approach.

It has also been revealed through legalbanter.co.uk that Cllr Denis Allen, who appears to be Councils front man on this issue is quoted in the following extract,

I've just spoken to Councillor Denis Allen. Apparently this rule has
been in force since the Labour Council was in power, and it has only
just come to light. It is to do with a Nu Labour guidance that
councils have the responsibility of every child and are responsible for
what happens to every child. It has been interpreted by some
"official" possibly incorrectly (Mr Allen's exact words), and he is
going to investigate who authorised this ruling.

I did mention that any council official who tries to stop and question
a member of the public in a public place could be landed with a
harassment charge, but he just said he will investigate. I also put
to him that why no-one in the council scrutinised the actions of their
officers, and why wasn't any ruling debated publicly and checked with
common sense. The reply was "We took this rule from the previous party
and are investigating why this rule was in place".

It is unbelievable, that after all these months, the Conservative administration still point the accusing finger at Labour in another attempt to shift the blame. I would be interested in hearing what they have to say.

This policy has been put into force without any Public Consultation, input or debate and Telford & Wrekin Council, who are so use to getting their own way have completely under estimated the reaction from the public.

It is now reported that the Home Office and Civil rights campaign group Liberty have also joined the wide spread condemnation of this policy.

Questions now need to be asked at the highest level of T&W Council and just what has the Director of Community Resources got to say. He is paid a handsome salary yet remains clear of any public questioning, if he is prepared to accept a reported six figure salary, he should now come forward to public scrutiny.

Council Leader Andrew Eade made promises of Residents having a say at full Council, if there was ever a time to keep this promise, this is it or would he prefer to try and keep residents in their place and constantly flounder from one failed policy to the next.

This failed policy and the criticism Telford & Wrekin Council now face, could jeopardise any funding application they are making or wish to make. If they cannot handle this correctly, their ability to handle other larger issues must and will be questioned.

It is vital that this issue is not let go, we as residents cannot afford or allow these people to blindly lead us into a police state, if this policy is allowed now and is allowed to succeed, our Civil liberties will not just be eroded, but they will be taken away in huge chunks.

The Public Protest Planned for Saturday 13th September 2008, 10.30am at the Arena, must still go ahead and we must make our voices heard in a peaceful demonstration.

I have received positive feedback and believe there will be a good turnout.
