Taxi drivers could face English test

Taxi drivers in Telford may soon have to sit an English test to ensure they can communicate effectively with their passengers. It is all part of a “clear the air” action plan.

Other planned improvements include checks by “mystery shopper” passengers from the Driving Standards Agency and a dress code for drivers.

The moves follow disputes and allegations of racism against Telford & Wrekin Council over several years.

Some 42 per cent of taxi drivers in Telford are from the Asian community and they claimed to have been singled out for spot-checks.

i think the 'mystery shops' are a great idea. i have had one driver on their mobile while taking me to work...two run a red light and one speeding. all in a matter of months. from one company (central)

not good considering they could be risking my life.

something needs to be done!!
