Any coincidence then that the new "safety Barriers" at Old Park Roundabout are supposed to be such a success at Nottingham. Somebody got some cheap guttering to offload then????

It would appear that Mr Frater wrote a letter to the local evening paper, the Nottingham Evening Post, implying that his attempts to move the city council forward were being thwarted by councillors living in the past.

Naturally the city's Labour administration took exception and summoned a closed meeting to allow him to explain. Unfortunately, on the day of the meeting Mr Frater had to cry off because of flu, so the city's Labour leader was asked to meet him privately for a "clear the air" discussion.

Afterwards the council leader gave the usual public relations message about "progress having been made" which to my mind is like the football chairman's statement of "having every confidence in the manager."

So it could be that our late unlamented chief executive is in line for another pay-off. And as he is on a four year contract at £180K a year it could add up to a tidy sum.

However, nearer to home, watch out for news about another senior officer at T&W being investigated!

Yes. Very exciting times!

Some TWC officers were waiting for a "Bobby Ewing, it was all just a bad dream!" moment. When Phil Davis and Michael Frater would return, triumphant, to lead the new Labour Group of TWC at the next election (Independents down to 1, namely G. Davies) No Lib Dem, No Tories) to the fabled Golden Trough of Mammon. (Sorry! Of course, I meant Socialist Utopia! What was I thinking of??)

But is the rumour that some might actually have their collar felt by Inspector Knacker of the West Mercia CID true? Or just another dream of a different kind?

Inspector Knacker WILL be called in if allegations can be substantiated, so I have been told. However, I must add that while my informant has proved totally reliable in the past, he/she has been known to "colour" the details a bit. In other words, while the substance will be 100 per cent correct, the assessment may not be quite as on the mark.

If the plod were serious investigating the council they could do worse than check out the famous "now you see him, now you don't - is he working for Telford & Wrekin this week?" planning officer.

Several years ago I brought to the attention of a local councillor and a senior officer that a local builder was boasting that he and his business partners could do pretty much what they wanted in planning terms (the evidence of one or two of their projects certainly seemed to bear this out). When challenged that they'd never get planning permission his response was "we just make sure that X enjoys his holidays".

What happened? **** all.

I think that there might be a different reaction, now. As long as the right councillor is spoken to.

And it is for THAT reason some officers are cutting and running.
