Six more held in trafficking probe

(UKPA) – 1 hour ago

Detectives investigating alleged human trafficking and exploitation have made six further arrests.

West Mercia Police detained the suspects - five men and a woman - at addresses in Shropshire, West Sussex, West Yorkshire and Berkshire as part of a multi-agency inquiry.

Eleven other people have already been charged in connection with the investigation into offences said to have been committed against children in the Telford area of Shropshire.

The latest arrests were made after warrants were executed at a total of six addresses, including three in Telford.

In a statement issued by West Mercia Police, Detective Superintendent Steve Cullen, said: "The investigation is one that we have been working on for some time in conjunction with our partners at Telford and Wrekin Council, the local Primary Care Trust, the UK Human Trafficking Centre and Serious Organised Crime Agency's Vulnerable Persons Team.

"These arrests come as part of phase three of this operation and the scale of what we're investigating is demonstrated by the fact that we have not only executed warrants in Telford this time round, but also in West Sussex, West Yorkshire and Berkshire too."

Mr Cullen continued: "I am unable to comment further on this investigation at the present time but I can confirm that we expect the work we are doing to continue for some time into the future."
