Council planning to sell off HQ
Telford & Wrekin Council is set to sell off its headquarters to kick-start a massive regeneration of the town centre.

The authority is understood to have lost patience after years of talks over the possible redevelopment of the town centre and wants to make it a reality.

Councillor Andrew Eade, council leader, said: “It is clearly to everyone’s benefit to get rid of the awful offices the council has at the moment. They are akin to a multi-storey car park and a real blot on the landscape.”

The council is eyeing up a number of possible alternative sites for its new headquarters, including the Southwater area of the town centre.

Exclusive by Simon Hardy - read the full story in today’s Shropshire Star

Footnote - This was highlighted as part of the town Centre Redevelopment and The Hark Group included it as part of their presentation earlier this year

Would Mr Eade like to tell us how he can stand by and watch part of a children's ward be closed, or how he is unable to find money for dangrous roads yet he can find money for new council offices.

Andrew Eade has just been on the news about the Town Centre and HQ For sale and reffered to that term of consultation, those of us who attended the town Park Consultation know exactly what a farce their view on consultation is.

I do feel the Hark Group has had its nose put out of joint as they were asked to to do their part with the site.

Of course we then have the Credit Crunch, which won't affect the Council when you are playing with millions of pounds of tax payers money.

Here, i feel we will see the Council, EP,AWM and TT gettig there way, yes a night time economy, but at what cost to district centres and outlying areas.

I do feel the arena is not as safe as they have us believe and more of the Town Park will be sold off, which of course will make it bigger.

To some extent I feel the Shopping Centre will prove to be a bit of a white elephant with the Council making all the right noises to the Hark Group whilst being prepared to stab them in the back.

The Council are of course keen to have flats over looking the Town Park and these have already been taken out of the Hark Group plans because of the current financil climate.

Watch for more local quangos being developed?

The Town Centre needs sorting, the residents need the truth and an efective voice at full council - which of course , although pomised is not going to happen.

I see Keith Austin is now entering the debate saying the offering f the HQ was his idea in 2006. To some extent it rings true as the tories have only caried on Labour Policy and have yet to really make their own mark.
