AFC TELFORD UNITED – NOT JUST A FOOTBALL CLUB

AFC Telford United has become synonymous in its reputation as a football club and has enjoyed considerable success over recent years.

But there is more to AFC Telford United that goes well beyond football and like an octopuses tentacles, reaches out further and into many if not all communities throughout Telford.

The area I refer to is the area of youth support and education. The club does not blow its own trumpet with regards the success it has in youth support and to some extent that is understandable.

When working with or supporting young people, there is a very fine line in letting people know what you do and being seen to gain some notoriety or publicity for doing it.

I believe it is this fine line that causes AFC Telford United to remain quiet about its achievements and many other organisations who do similar positive work to also remain silent.

Chairman Lee Carter wears many different hats, from grounds man to safety to youth worker, many if not all of the players do similar, they are not just footballers, but also full fill a role as role models to young people, both directly and indirectly.

Over the past few years I have had the pleasure of meeting many young people, many of whom have experienced various difficulties in their short lives. Some have lost direction through no fault of their own only to be given a fresh outlook on life when having become involved with AFC Telford United.

Some of these young people have received football coaching from various players and many have received educational support from the players and staff at the club.

I know all to well what a positive influence a successful sports person can have on a young person and know that as a role model and mentor they can have a positive effect. Often, they can reach a young person in ways family, teachers, social workers and other professional bodies cannot.

AFC Telford United is giving many young people support. The support given is the club thinking out of the box and assisting many who do not work too well in the traditional arena of a school or classroom environment.

There is something very special about being taught something by a star you admire, whether that be football, boxing, hockey or even mathematics. The young person listens, acts differently, but most of all listens and learns.

Having recently visited the club, I saw at first hand the passion and tenacity the club has with helping young people. I have also come to the feeling that the club has or had become an accidental political pawn, when you work with many partners and like minded bodies, politics will always creep in there somewhere, politicians who aim their frustration towards the club, need to think outside the box, some would benefit from seeing what the club does at first hand.

Apart from the passion and the tenacity the club shows to its youth support, I was struck by something new.

All too often, we hear statements like

“If our work only helps one, or stops one, then it has all been worth it”

AFC Telford had a different train of thought,

“We want to positively impact on every young person that walks in our doors”

A view I’ve shared myself and still share today.

I can honestly say that AFC Telford United is positively influencing many young people in new and positive ways. This positive influence is far reaching in a way that cannot be measured and this positive influence will last long after we have gone, but also influences those that are not only the future of the Borough, but those that are our decision makers of tomorrow.

Telford has lost faith in its Labour MP David Wright

David Wrights Campaigns

Oakengates Rent Freeze

He launched a this campaign stating

“I am shocked and disgusted that the council could be planning such a disastrous move which could destroy a large number of businesses in Oakengates. The council needs to come clean about what it is planning and it is time all local councillors stood up for Oakengates.”

Whilst we agree that rent hikes could be the wrong move, if the rumours are true and this is what he based his campaign on, it is even more concerning that when the previous Labour administration planned and then implemented rent rises prior to the 2007 local elections, MP David Wright remained extremely silent on the issue.

This silence meant he actually supported any rent hike but changed his stance once the Conservatives gained control of the council.

YOUTH VOICE

David Wrights says on his web site

David Wright MP said:
“Young people in Telford need more things to do and places to go, and they also deserve to have a say in how our council and our country is run. That’s why I am delighted that the Labour Government will be investing in new and improved youth facilities in every community and it’s also why I think every young person in Telford should make their views known on lowering the age of voting to 16.

Yet he remained quiet when Labour were closing youth facilities throughout Telford and Wrekin. He sat back and stayed quiet when Labour closed youth clubs like Gower street in St.Georges.

Only when Labour quite rightly lost the administration of Telford and Wrekin did MP David Wright find his voice. The irony is, he tried to blame the Conservative administration for the youth centre closures that Labour implemented.

MP Demands Action on Local Pubs

This campaign was launched in March 2009 yet he never uttered a single word when other pubs were being burnt out in Telford.

MP David Wright remained quiet on the repeated arson attacks on the Royal Bingo Hall in Dawley,

March 2007: The White Hart pub in Hinkshay Road, Dawley, was left a blackened shell when a blaze ripped through the boarded-up building in the third suspicious fire at derelict pubs in Telford in that month.

MP David Wright remained silent

August 2007: Two derelict houses were gutted by fire following an arson attack in Summerhill, Sutton Hill, Telford.

MP David Wright again remained silent

October 2007: The derelict Red Admiral pub in Sutton Hill was a magnet for arsonists, being targeted repeatedly, and was eventually razed to the ground.

MP David Wright Again remained silent

And whilst we remain on the subject of arson, never once did MP David Wright speak up about the constant arson attacks on derelict residential properties on Sutton Hill. The fact remains that he did everything he could, not only to avoid the subject, but he also did everything he did to avoid the area.

Housing Summit

After bowing to public pressure, MP David Wright finally held a housing summit in November 2008, two years after the initial promised date.

MP David Wright then promised to have the report ready for February 2009, by February 2010 MP David Wright has failed to deliver the promised report even though he issued a newsletter in approx March 2009 stating it had been finalized.

MP David Wright sent out the following email

JUNE 30th 2009

Dear John

I will be producing the report as soon as I can, I am swamped with work at the moment. I'll keep you posted.

All best wishes

David

Yes, David Wright was busy, busy ensuring his own career was given a higher priority than his constituency as this is when he became the Labour Whip.

MP David Wright has now removed ALL reference to the housing summit from his web site, proof he has NO intention of keeping his promise.

TWITTER

And of course there is the latest debacle over the Twitter comments he made and then subsequently lied about. What is he going to say next about it, lets face it, whatever he does say is going to be far removed from truth.

SOUTH TELFORD

What did MP David Wright ever do for the likes of Sutton Hill, NOTHING, he avoided the area for years and has never returned to it, other areas suffer equally because of his ignorance.

SUMMARY

MP David Wright has taken every opportunity to further his career even if it meant lying, breaking every promise he made and taking the opportunity to jump on any passing band wagon.

He has only ever spoken up on any local issue only when the administration changed and when a general election came into site.

A vote for MP DAVID WRIGHT is a wasted vote and this man should never be trusted.

YOUR IN A PICKLE DAVID WRIGHT

David Wright MP
House of Commons
LONDON
SW1A 0AA

16 February 2010

Dear David,

I am writing to you regarding comments you appear to have made on Twitter yesterday about the Conservative Party.

On your Twitter feed, you posted a comment in the afternoon responding to a Conservative advertising campaign featuring people who have never voted Tory before. You wrote: ‘Because you can put lipstick on a scum-sucking pig, but it’s still a scum-sucking pig. And cos [sic] they would ruin Britain.’

This is the sort of offensive behaviour that turns people off voting. However, instead of apologising for language that demeans the office of a minister of the Crown, you chose this morning to defend it, describing it as ‘legitimate comment’.

Moreover, rather than owning up to your actions you seem to be trying to claim that your ‘Twitter feed’ was hacked into. This explanation is simply not credible:

·        The ‘Tweet’ was made under your name.

·        You have used similar language in the past on Twitter, including describing David Cameron as a ‘horrible opportunistic scumbag.’

·        Immediately after the ‘Tweet’, you posted again to say that you ‘must’ve hit a nerve,’ and then again that Conservatives ‘do get riled very easily.’

·        You then decided to apologise for the ‘Tweet’

Only after all of this did you then claim that your Twitter account had been ‘tinkered’ with.

I would be grateful if you could now stop treating people like fools and answer the following questions:

·        If you did not make the comments, who did?

·        How did the person hack into your account and have you reported the matter to Twitter?

·        When did you first know about this? Is this the first time your account has been hacked into?

·        When did you regain control of your account?

·        Why did you make comments, which you have not disputed making, saying ‘They do get very riled easily don’t they,’ and ‘Oh dear, upsetting Tories again. Must’ve hit a nerve’? If these were not references to the offensive post, what were they in reference to?

·        Why did you make these comments after your account was allegedly hacked into and not offer an apology once discovering your account had been hacked into?

The Ministerial Code states that ‘Ministers of the Crown are expected to behave in a way that upholds the highest standards of propriety.’ (Ministerial Code, June 2007; section 1.1)

You are clearly not currently abiding with either the letter or spirit of the Code. I would therefore be grateful if, as a matter of public interest, you could respond to me as soon as possible both to clarify your explanation and to apologise unreservedly.

Yours sincerely,

Eric Pickles

Chairman, The Conservative Party

Member of Parliament for Brentwood and Ongar
